El gran piano RUBEN GONZÁLEZ no pudo terminar sus estudios de Médico por falta de dinero que Bendición que no tenia los medios para estudiar sino hubiéramos perdido uno de los grandes músicos Cubanos porque a raíz de no poder estudiar se dedicó a la música y dio cátedra en America latina llevando así sus conocimientos a muchos países

THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSION. The original piece has undeniable american, brazilian samba influences, as well as puertorican and cuban influences, it is NOT merely cuban music. People do bring their own influences with them to other countries, just like Rafael did when he lived in Cuba for 5 years. The original piece is a classical composition very different to this rendition by Buena Vista Social Club. The musical influences of Rafael Hernández are mainly african american and puertorican. It was him who taught cubans as much if not more than what he learned from them (Arsenio Rodríguez y Benny Moré acudian a donde él para pedirle consejos sobre cómo cantar y arreglar composiciones porque fue él quien por primera vez, y ello se aprecia en la composición original de esta canción, exploró arreglos musicales con trompetas y bongós en un tratamiento armónico especial que sentó las bases para el desarrollo de lo que son los conjuntos modernos, 20 años antes de experimentarlo el cubano Arsenio Rodríguez. ). In the original piece there are clearly african american jazz influences, cuban and puerto rican influences, all of which he learned in the army and while living in New York prior to moving to Havana, as well as some cuban influences he got in the 5 years he lived there. This Buena Vista Social Club rendition might be different and ¨cuban inspired¨, but the original version is a classical composition with mainly jazz and SOME afro caribbean influences, not really cuban music and it was not even classified as cuban music by cuban musicologist Ernesto Grenet. You better get your information straight.

The composer is Puerto Rican Rafael Hernández and the original piece is very different to this Son Montuno rendition by Buena Vista Social Club, as good as it is. The original puertorican composition is much more classical in nature and does not have Son Montuno. And NO it was not cuban music that he composed. The piece is a classical piece with jazz influences and both cubans and puertorican influences. About the ever present argument brought by Cubans, that Salsa is cuban music, the answer is no. Salsa utilizes Cuban Son in conjuction with other rythms, including Puerto Rican Guaracha (Cubans to this day ignore the fact that we developed our own guarachas under the Jíbaro tradition and that it was Cortijo y su Combo who popularized the mixture of Bomba and Plena with Guaracha Puertorriqueña in the 1950´s) and Jíbaro Músic and jazz influences, but even brazilian influences (See Salsa´s most prolific composer, Puerto Rican Tite Curet Alonso, or Roberto Roena). Moreover, even the cuban rythms in Salsa, Son Montuno and Guaguancó (there is NO chachacha in Salsa, nor any mambo), are represented in Salsa in a very different fashion than cubans used it and it is how puertoricans adapted cuban music with their own. You can see this in all of Willie Colon´s work, in Raphy leavitt, Tite Curet Alonso, El Gran Combo. There are plenty of examples in many LP´s of this ¨progressive nature of the Salsa genre¨, its indeterminate structure, its amalgamations of different rythms in one son, akin to Pink Floyd in Rock. According to Cuban Leonardo Acosta, there is a great change in musical arrangements in Salsa in comparison to Cuban music, like the addition of the Jazz influences brought by Puerto Rican Mon Rivera, namely the Trombone, the timbales used in an agressive way, the electronic bass, the piano and cuatro guitar from Puerto Rico, but also melodic changes consisting in a puerto rican structure of singing that comes from Plena and Seis Chorreao. Furthermore, Salsa is different to Cuban music in that it is spontaneous, improvises and does not have a determinate structure and I quote in spanish: Carlos Eduardo Cataño in Salsa Genealogy: ¨La Salsa funciona, entonces, como una “manera de hacer música” (Quintero R., 1998), en la cual se combinaban libremente (no siempre los mismos ni de igual manera) diversos géneros y expresiones musicales caribeñas y/o afroamericanas. Ángel Quintero ejemplifica cómo una misma canción puede incluir diversas formas musicales, provenientes por demás de distintos puntos geográficos y origen étnico: Melódicamente “Somos el son” se inicia en los metales con una cita del aguinaldo cagüeño (…) El acompañamiento está basado en combinaciones armónicas que evocan la tradición árabe-andaluza, mientras el ritmo entremezcla bomba, guaguancó y tumbao (o son) (…) Antes de comenzar el soneo, sin embargo, el solista incorpora una décima incompleta (combinando dos primera cuartetas) cantada en el estilo del seis mapeyé, otra de las formas tradicionales del campesinado jíbaro, que usa el ritmo afro-árabe que se identifica con la habanera (pp. 94-95). De esta forma, entiendo, se atiende más que a una fecha o a un lugar, a un proceso que fue creando el contexto para su reconocimiento. Una conformación paulatina de condiciones que a través de las prácticas cotidianas de una comunidad y del olfato de la industria cultural obtuvo nombre propio: la “Salsa”.¨ It is time to have serious conversations about this .... cubans. Also, do not forget that many supposedly cuban songs in the first half of the 20th century were actually composed by Pedro Flores, Rafael Hernández and Bobby Capó, all of whom were puertorican and brought their puertorican and american influences to Cuba since all of them lived in New York prior to arriving to Havana and had a lot of african american influences. Instead of claiming ownership of rythms and falsifying history to suit your identity politics agenda, you should celebrate how we have a shared cultural treasure, that we are brother and that we have influenced both throughout history (dont want to mention the may times Celina and Reutilio and Celia Cruz sang to Puerto Rico and used Puerto Rican songs in La Sonora Matancera or in full LP´s of Celina and Reutilio, just like Puerto Ricans used cuban songs in New York).
